More on Catchup

Title:  Ashley Fallouting - Second Attempt
Date: July 6, 2012
Medium: Graphite / Photoshop
Scale: Original is 9" x 12"
Time Limit: About 1 hour.

Notes: Just drew this really fast (about an hour) from life while she played New Vegas. I just wanted to see afterward if my pencils could be painted over. It actually looks kinda neat like that.

Title:  Red-Tailed Hawk
Date: July 13, 2012
Medium: Photoshop
Scale: Original is 700px x 663px

Notes: I love birds... Especially the eyes.

Title:  Joe Serious
Date: July 10, 2012
Medium: Photoshop
Scale: Original is 1275px x 548px

Notes: Alcide looking all serious...

Title:  Pancakes the Bunny
Date: July 13, 2012
Medium: Photoshop
Scale: Original is 1050px x 900px

Notes: This was a fun speedy, but I tried to rebuild the background too late in the painting. It ended up muddying the foreground and the bunny herself. Will have to try again on her in a different position.

Title:  Faces from Life
Date: July 12 - 16, 2012
Medium: Graphite
Scale: Original is 9" x 12"

Notes: The top half of the page is from life, then later I went back using what I learned and tried to make the other half of the page into imagination faces. By far the life ones are better, but it was still a really fun exercise that I will have to repeat. I think it helped me get a better grasp on faces...

Title:  Go, Go, Go, Hands
Date: July 14, 2012
Medium: Graphite
Scale: Original is 9" x 12"

Notes: You can NEVER get enough hand studies. These are still and will probably be for some time, the hardest part of human anatomy for me to do. Just keep practicing more and more...

Title:  Southern Comfort Still Life
Date: July 17, 2012
Medium: Photoshop
Scale: Original is 1450px x 2584px

Notes: This is really the only thing successful from today. I had this in my head from when I woke up and was like, must paint that. It was fun and an exciting material test.

Title:  Armor / Clothing StudyDate: July 21, 2012Medium: GraphiteScale: 9" x 12"

Notes: The traditional version of my armor studies. I threw in my hat for good measure. You never know when you'll need even a basic hat to protect your head.

Title:  Posemaniac Return
Date: July 24, 2012
Medium: Photoshop

Notes: I need to do these a ton more, they are always the greatest warm-up.

Title:  Midori Still Life
Date: July 25, 2012
Medium: Photoshop
Scale: Original is 1695px x 2444px

Notes: Hmm... I had a ton of fun on this one, and honestly the only thing that I thought about when I started it was that book. But then... after painting it, I think I'm noticing something odd. All my still lifes seem to have LIQUOUR IN THEM!
About 1.5hrs

Title:  Muscle Poses
Date: July 26, 2012
Medium: Photoshop
Scale: Original is 925px x 1443px

Notes: More and more anatomy studies, this time down to the muscle level. I'll have to do a few more of these because it will most likely help me a ton in the near future. Plus I think they look interesting.

Title:  Leather Study
Date: July 26, 2012
Medium: Photoshop
Scale: Original is 700px x 1176px

Notes: Just attempting to learn more about leather and skin tones before going back to the pin-up. This is actually the type of jacket that the pin-up girl is supposed to be wearing. This was done as fast as I could. Around thirty minutes.

Title:  Ashley in Charcoal
Date: July 29, 2012
Medium: Vine Charcoal
Scale: Original is 9" x 12"

Notes: I just can't NOT love vine charcoal, it's so easy to manipulate. If you ever get a chance, make sure to try it out, if you have not already... This is my fiancee done in charcoal.

Title:  Bouguereau in Charcoal
Date: July 28, 2012
Medium: Vine Charcoal
Scale: Original is 9" x 12"

Notes: Lunch break quickie on Saturday.

Title:  Petey in Charcoal
Date: July 30, 2012
Medium: Vine Charcoal
Scale: Original is 9" x 12"

Notes: Set Petey up with a book and just went into it.

Title:  Buddha Still-Life
Date: July 31, 2012
Medium: Photoshop
Scale: Original is 2550px x 2068px

Notes: I wanted to paint an Asian-themed still-life, so I decided it would be this. The cloth took way too long by comparison to the rest. Done completely in square brush. About an hour and a half.

Playing Catchup

Title:  Clare, From Life
Date: September 17 & 19, 2012
Medium: Ink
Scale: Each 'page' is 9" x 12"

Notes: We did a few life drawings that were timed. Each one was about twenty minutes. The focus was to really get in there with the ink and use measuring and mark making to it's maximum. The top right was to only use one value to really get the form out. This was extremely fun and I want to do many, many more of these.

Title:  Studying Techniques
Date: September 19, 2012
Medium: Photoshop

Notes: Each of these is using a different technique to get value. I'm trying to learn every way I can and see what really sticks for me. Honestly the Gibson method might be the most interesting, but how does that translate to painting? I mean I guess I could start to put washes on top of what I draw, but I feel like I need some color instead of just straight value. Maybe I could digital paint over these lines? I'm not sure yet really... will definitely need more experimentation and practice before this makes sense. Anyway, the second method is a bit closer to edge / planar analysis. It was meant to find the contours and big mass of color to just get all the things in the right place. And finally, the third one is a subtractive form of painting. I was just blocking in the black shapes and then coming back into it with the lighter tones until it started to get closer to what I was looking for. Hopefully all of these make sense, but regardless... I'll have more of them soon.

Title:  Life Drawing II
Date: Variable
Medium: Ink
Scale: Each 'page' is 9" x 12"

Notes: Getting back into the swing of things with a ton of life drawing... this time in ink-o-vision. Just gotta keep on trucking... only a ton of hours to go before I reach the 10k hour mark.

Title:  Life Drawing I
Date: Variable
Medium: Graphite
Scale: Each 'page' is 9" x 12"

Notes: Getting back into the swing of things with a ton of life drawing... this is just the graphite ones. I have a ton more in the pipe.

Title:  Figure Sketches 1 - 3
Date: August 1 - 31, 2012
Medium: Photoshop

Notes: Just a ton of sketches for studies. Need to do sooo many more of these...

Title:  Crash Study
Date: August 4, 2012
Medium: Photoshop
Scale: Original is 2550px x 1072px

Notes: This movie is actually a really good movie. I especially love some of the long panned shots such as this one.
